The 'safest' approach would be to link statically against
libavformat/libavcodec in the backport. With the obvious overhead for
security updates.

This is a common source of problems. Still, in order to get e.g. web/vp8
support or vdpau etc, you'd still need an updated ffmpeg.

Would something like that be a candidate for backports-sloppy?
