How would a backport of vlc remove the issue with the ffmpeg library
used? If I read that right you also ask for a backport of ffmpeg then?

If I read that correctly the issue isn't because of vlc and ffmpeg in
lenny but because of the usage of debian-multimedia. Do you have pulled
in packages from there? Does "down"grading the relevant packages to the
version in Debian lenny fix the issue for you? If so please be adviced
to not pull in packages from debian-multimedia because there is no
coordination done at all by the team that puts the packages up there and
breakage is well known from their repositories.

 Enjoy,
Rhonda
