No sound with ESS Technology ES1983S



Hi,
switching from the standard etch kernel 2.6.18-6-686 to the current
backports.org kernel 2.6.26-bpo.1-686 I lost the sound on my son's
computer (an old HP Omnibook XE2).

alsaconfig does not help; when logging into KDE I constantly run into:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.


Going back to the 2.6.18 kernel sound once again works like a charm.
