dkim-filter, etch backports, "padding too short", libssl issues?

Hi all

I'm using dkim-filter from etch-backports on my Debian Etch system.
Everything works quite well, except the following message being logged
on every (even successful) verification:

Jan 5 22:04:57 mailer dkim-filter[952]: 4D35A342EEEF SSL
error:04067069:rsa routines:RSA_EAY_PUBLIC_DECRYPT:pkcs1 padding too short

I discussed this on the dkim-milter-discuss list:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=49608CAD.8090907%40dawnlink.net&forum_name=dkim-milter-discuss

Actually, one of the persons on the list made a guess about the source
of the error:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20090105125936.O53037%40protagonist.smi.sendmail.com&forum_name=dkim-milter-discuss

It seems as it would be some kind of error which is quite specific to
using the etch backport version.

Actually I'm wondering what would be the best way to get rid of this
problem:

a.) send bug report to dkim-filter Debian maintainer (who will
probably not be able to fix the problem, since I guess that it won't
    happen in unstable)
b.) send bug report against the backports package (I did not find any
information about how to do that)
c.) compile a installation of OpenSSL to /usr/local (from latest vanilla
source) and compile a local installation of dkim-milter (from latest
    vanilla source)

I'm using etch-backports for quite some time now and I never had any
problems with it (thanks, btw.!). I would be interested in hearing what
you consider the best practice approach to debug and deal with such a
problem.

Kind regards,
thomas.
