As per http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=instructions

echo deb http://www.backports.org/debian sarge-backports main >> /etc/apt/source.list
apt-get -t sarge-backports install linux-image-2.6.18-3-686

I believe all the debian kernels are built with SMP support these days.
