Another data point for you - kernel images compiled using:
  kernel-package_10.034bpo1          and
  linux-source-2.6.15_2.6.15-6bpo1

Exhibit the same problems.

I'm fairly certain the combination of
  kernel-package_10.033bpo1          and
  linux-source-2.6.15_2.6.15-5bpo1

worked as advertised.
