It is not necessary IMO. I have done KDE 3.5.1 backport and it works with
the dbus from backports.org (0.23.4-7bpo1).
I had to drop the zeroconf support (avahi), but otherwise the backporting
was not that hard.
(If you want, you can find my backport at
deb ftp://office.deverto.hu/kde-backports/ sarge-backports/
altough it is not complete yet (kdegames is missing)).
