If glibc or systemd are incompatible with the version of Linux
present, then it probably gave an error either in the initramfs or
when Linux starts init so.

Is that due to lack of serial console hardware or a limitation of the
device? Not sure if this is the same device as yours but at least one
person was able to get serial access:

I think what I discovered was that the buffalo firmware is also
Debian, but ancient and probably modified.
I would suggest also trying Debian jessie or wheezy with the original
buffalo Linux kernel.
