The instructions say:

But when I try doing it like that I get:

It looks like the interpolation is not working.  My system boots ok with:

bootcmd=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200n8; run bootcmd_mmc; bootm 0x00800000 0x01100000

But I get no console output with :

bootcmd=setenv bootargs $(bootargs_console); run bootcmd_mmc; bootm 0x00800000 0x01100000
