Yes, I have connected the same external HDD to the USB port on the front
of the TS-219P and then performed the actions as in the original post:
rsync was able to transfer 19GB w/o any noticeable errors. At least the
kernel didn't report any.

Referring the above link, it seems the USB topology is identical to the
TS-209II. I had owned this device; on that device the transfer worked
with no problems (though I can't remember which port was used).

Looking at the output of lsusb -v, I see the discrete 4-way USB hub
presumably controlling the two USB ports on the back side of the device.

When I'm a little braver, I will again attempt the large transfer using
rsync and a back side USB port.

Should I report the output of lsusb -v here?
