spin-down usb disk: how to know if it does automatically?

Hi,

After installing debian in slug. my hard disk Phillips SPD5200CC [1], seems that spin-downs automatically: blue light that indicate activity is off and the shell is like "pause" (every command I type does not show before blue light is on).

I would like to make sure that it's. How can I know that HD is spin-down automatically? If it's not, why blue light is off?

Thanks in advance,
Xan.
