Well, on further reflection, the 0.3.1 version of the driver (which will
be in the next Debian kernel release I believe) fixes some bugs as listed in
http://www.hohnstaedt.de/ixp_npe/0.3.1/changelog.txt
which may or may not be the same problem you are seeing.
