Dan Kegel's crosstool matrix shows that none of the 4.x compilers work
on armv5-softfloat which is the one I've been using.  What are you
using to build APEX.  If it's a arm/armeb machine, is there a chance I
can get a shell?

There is a working arm9 version of gcc-4.1.0.  I'm going to try that
as well.
