You could install SlugOS (also from www.slug-firwmare.net) to see if the
problem is in your NSLU2's hardware setup or your network settings.

If you can ssh in when running SlugOS, but still can't when running
Debian, then you can always debootstrap Debian from SlugOS/LE.
