Package: apache
Version: 1.3.33-2
Severity: normal

The last three times I have upgraded apache (to testing), it has failed
to come back up after being restarted.

Running apache -F shows a segfault.

Eventually, I figured out that by removing a bunch of virtual hosts from
httpd.conf, I could bring apache back up.

The strangest thing is that I could then add those virtual hosts back
into httpd.conf, and apache would continue to come up with no problem.

This has occurred at least three times now.

Unfortunately, I don't have a backtrace from any of the segfaults, and I
can't reproduce this problem. But the fact that it's happened more than
once, and that it's so bizarre, lead me to think I should report it,
just in case the behavior is more widespread, especially with sarge
release coming up.

If anyone has any clue as to what might explain this behavior, I'd be
quite interested. There is nothing nonstandard about this installation;
just a small web hosting service running for the most part on Debian
testing.

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/284215 in Debian BTS
against the package apache. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/418266. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
