OK, please give a more detailed description on how to reproduce the 
problem, then.

With missing SSLCertificateKeyFile directive, I get

[Tue May 19 21:11:19 2009] [error] Init: Private key not found

which is not perfect but points to the problem.

The file permissions on the key/cert should not be a problem since 
apache reads those files as root.
