Bug#261349: make-ssl-cert script hangs

When I attempt to create a new certificate for imapd, using
make-ssl-cert, it runs just fine through the colored questions.
Then, apparently, openssl did not like what it got from
the colored questions and starts to ask its own questions.
Unfortunately, it hangs at the first and does not accept input.
The 'colored' questions are regular dpkg-reconfigure style pages
with a question on 'em to answer.
After those are finished, the terminal (gnome terminal) outputs this:

What you are about to enter is what is called a Distinguished Name or a
DN.
There are quite a few fields but you can leave some blank
For some fields there will be a default value,
If you enter '.', the field will be left blank.

No matter what I try, there is nothing except CTRL-C that gets me out of
that. At that point, imapd.pem is a zero length file.
For the template I use a copy from /etc/ssl/cert/openssl.cnf that I've
changed for my situation (country and such).
