He, I had it reversed:

LoadModule dir_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_dir.so
LoadModule autoindex_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_autoindex.so

with your config (mod_dir after mod_autoindex) it works, with my
one it does not work. Don't know why on my config the
mod_autoindex was loaded after mod_dir...
