Package: apache
Version: 1.3.22-5

In package version 1.3.22-4, the log file rotation mechanism was changed
from savelog to logrotate. I think there are three problems with the
current state of affairs:

  - Log files in directories other than /var/log/apache that were rotated
before are no longer rotated now. The postinst script checks for this
and prints a message, but this message is easy to miss. The fact that
administrator intervention is required should IMHO be presented much
    more prominently.

  - File naming: savelog rotated file.log to file.log.0, while logrotate
starts with file.log.1 and ignores the existing file.log.0. This
causes the .0 files from the last-but-one logging period to stay
around forever, and, even worse, this logging period is missing in
the rotated series of files, causing a gap in the statistics data.

  - The logrotate config file /etc/logrotate.d/apache does not contain
the option "delaycompress"; the absence of this option causes
logrotate to compress the last log file while apache is still
writing to it (the "/etc/init.d/apache reload" is only run after
the whole rotating business is over). This means that log entries
    can get lost.

I found this out today when I upgraded a web server running "woody" from
1.3.22-2.1 to 1.3.22-5 and ran "logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/apache".
Until these issues are addressed, I'd rather stay away from upgrading my
other production web servers to a current version of the apache package.

Thank you for your work and consideration!

Arndt

This bug dealt with problems around the transition from cron.daily to
logrotate. All the issues here were addressed some time ago.
