Bug#153593: apache2-common: directory listing should produce valid HTML

Package: apache2-common
Version: 2.0.39-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I use the standard apache directory listing as part of a website, and I use the
wdg-html-validator in spider mode to check the whole site. Unfortunately
apache directory listing is not valid according to this validator. This is
annoying since it produces a lot a error messages in the validator output.

For instance, you can see what I mean here:

  http://irancy.lis.inpg.fr/cgi-bin/validate.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Firancy.lis.inpg.fr%3A81%2F%7Elaurent%2F&input=yes&warnings=yes

The errors are:

* Line 8, character 46:
... icons/blank.gif" alt="Icon " /> <a href="?C=N&amp;O=D">Name< ...
                                 ^
Error: net-enabling start-tag requires SHORTTAG YES

# Line 8, character 46:
... icons/blank.gif" alt="Icon " /> <a href="?C=N&amp;O=D">Name< ...
                                 ^
Error: document type does not allow element IMG here
[...]

About the "SHORTTAG" error, how about changing the DOCTYPE to XHTML ?
