This is a bug in 'debianutils' version 3.1. When I went to report it today, I found that others had already reported it, and it had already been fixed by Manoj Srivastava:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=526606You need to revert 'debianutils' back to version 3.0.1 until the updated version hits your mirror -- should be soon. You might still have it in /var/cache/apt/archives; if so, you can downgrade using 'dpkg -i'.
