Except it's empty!

/etc/X11/xorg.conf is the correct file.

Try running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and after you answer the setup questions you shoukd habve the one dpgk configures, xorg.conf, which should 'not' be of 0 size, and the old xorg.conf renamed to xorg.conf.backup.
