I've been running opera for ages, and run it on the three major platforms 
(Linux/Windows/Mac), and on the two intel architectures. Can't say I've really 
noticed any problems with respect to speed.

Have you tried starting opera clean (moving .opera out of the way) to see if 
it's nothing there?
