If you have a floppy drive, have a look at supergrubdisk
http://stmaarten.globat.com/~supergrubdisk.org/index.php
If you set it up to boot from floppy, you have an emergency boot
procedure in case grub2 fails you.
You don't have to mess with your MBR to use supergrubdisk -- just with a
floppy disk.
You can. I'm told, also install it on a CD and boot from that.
