In /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/README.Debian.gz it says

Element        Example Value            Description
=======        =============            ===========
wpa-ssid       plaintextstring          sets the ssid of your network

Have you tried that?

Also with wireless-tools it reads now "wireless-essid" (minus instead of
underscore).
