I only began using debian with amd64. What is the debian
way to find and install a 486 kernel image?

From the command line:
======================

Before you start issue:

	apt-get update

To download any patches from the archive. If you want then a
	apt-get upgrade
Will install any newer versions of packages. If a package has a new
dependency then
	apt-get dist-upgrade
is what you want.

The command:
	apt-cache search <keyword>
will look for matches in the package database. To install them:
	apt-get install <package-name>

GUI

If your a GUI user then take a look at the "Synaptic Package Manager" it
has buttons for searching and (dist-)upgrading.
