One other tool you might consider is wajig that includes the gui front-end gjig.

Apt has finally started doing logging, but have found wajig's logging to be more useful - and a log you might not want to delete except when moving between releases.

The wajig log has saved me a lot of time in figuring out what update broke something.

If you need to do work via the command line, wajig is intuitive and MUCH easier to learn than memorizing all the apt and dpkg switches.
