This is, to be technically fair, not completely udev's fault.  udev
always expected == to be an equivalence statement, and = to be an
assigment.  It's just that it started enforcing it recently, and a
number of scripts supplied by packages did silly things as a result.

Thanks for this information, it helped me to correct my own rules.
