Get the 32bit libusb from the i386 deb, add it to /usr/local/lib32 and
add that to /etc/ld.so.conf.

apt-get install ia32-libs-dev gcc-3.4
export CC=gcc-3.4
export CFLAGS="-m32 -O2 -W -Wall -g"
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib32"
