Try booting up with a rescue disc and see if the CD drive shows up. I use
SLAX {based on Slackware} as my preferred diags/rescue tool just because
it's quicker to download than Debian-based Knoppix.
If Slax/Knoppix fail to see the CD drive, then it's probably faulty and might
even have been what caused the crash in the first place.
