no. rtc should work on all platforms.

You should also have the corresponding device:

$ ls -l /dev/rtc
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 10, 135 2006-05-03 19:15 /dev/rtc

There was a problem with RTC inthe past with Debian depending the way the kernel is built:

 <M> Enhanced Real Time Clock Support
 < > Generic /dev/rtc emulation

I've this setup, this means:

CONFIG_RTC=m
# CONFIG_GEN_RTC is not set

Then maybe you have to insert the module early in the boot process.
I've it in /etc/modules
Maybe some care should be taken in case you have an initrd.
