Using anything other than the package makes your system no longer be a
real debian system. Once you go overwriting things in places that by
policy is controlled by dpkg, then you are on your own. If things
break, you get to fix them yourself, and don't expect other people to
have an easy time helping you, since your system won't behave the way a
debian system should behave and is expected to behave. Sure it might
work 90 or 99% of the time, but the rest of the time you end up with a
mess that might require a reinstall to clean up again. The choice is
yours, just be aware that the choice decides who can help you fix it.
