my experience was that the difference between 2.6.8 and 2.6.11 was enormous for amd64 (although it might mainly have been for nforce based boards), since 2.6.11 things have really only just got more tidy (ie my mboard sound being specifically identified rather than just identified by its generic chip) im sure there are deeper architectural changes that are of benefit also. i recall nvidia whinging about changes that broke their drivers. but thats really their own fault.
