For various reasons, libperl5.8 does not install libperl.so.5.8 on any
arch outside of i386. Every other /usr/bin/perl is dynamically linked
to the library, which is included in the perl-base package.

Why is eperl dynamically linking to libperl.so (rather than the
libperl.so.5.8 soname)?
What do you get from the following?
ldd /usr/bin/eperl | fgrep libperl
objdump -p /usr/lib/libperl.so | fgrep SONAME
