I've had the same problem, but nothing shows up in /var/log/messages at all...

Well, if I unplug the mouse I get the -84 thing:

Jan 20 10:29:58 k8 kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: input irq
status -84 received
Jan 20 10:29:58 k8 last message repeated 7 times
Jan 20 10:29:58 k8 kernel: usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 2

I never thought to unplug the mouse and then plug it back in... I'm so
used to using a PS/2 mouse the thought never occurred to me!

Thanks for the tip!
