nvidia driver + agpgart a8v

Hi,
I am having some trouble enabling agpgart in debian unstable. I am
running the x86 version of debian, though I am posting to this group
because I am running an Asus AV8 Deluxe (chipset K8T800Pro) running
linux 2.6.10 (I compiled with Atholon64 on-CPU Gart as
modules, /dev/agpgart as module), on boot the modules seem to be
loaded....
"agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 816M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xdc000000"

"nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:01:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-6629 Wed Nov
3 13:12:51 PST 2004
NVRM: not using NVAGP, AGPGART is loaded!!
NVRM: not using NVAGP, AGPGART is loaded!!"

Yet the status of my nvidia (using the latest driver version) module
in /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status is
"Status: Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.",
X (XFree86 4.3 as provided in sid) runs noticably slow especially in
gnome (2.8). I am currently running with NvAGP mode 1 the X
configuration (XF86Config-4), though I have tried 1-3 and none seem to
work.

Any ideas?
Thanks.
