Well you could simply try:
cdrecord -dev ATAPI:/dev/hdc -toc (list toc of a cd) or -atip (list info
about a blank CDR type).
If that works, you probably have what you need.
Make sure ide-scsi is NOT loaded, and that ide-cd IS loaded.
If it does DVD's use growisofs -[Z for new, M for append] /dev/hdc
[mkisofs options like -J -R] [files to burn]
