how are you compiling the debian kernel? with fakeroot or on your own.
you may need a few more .deb's installed.

I've tried with different versions of gcc (gcc3.3, gcc3.4, gcc4.0) but
it still doesn't work. What's strange here ? Can anybody help me?
My system is debian -amd64 sid, kernel 2.6.11
