You would be able to use a different scsi-card, but by the time you've
found a scsi-card with the right connector, and which can talk to the
scanner at the low speed it requires (something like an adaptec 2904,
IIRC), you'll have invested more time and money than just buying an USB
scanner which you can connect straightaway. Just check the SANE pages
which ones are supported.
