You can configure ifrename via /etc/iftab (`man iftab` for more info) ifrename is executed by debian-supplied init script ( /etc/init.d/ifrename ) on startup right before networking is configured. So you don't need to worry about this step at all. Just get the /etc/iftab right and settings will take effect after next reboot or after executing: invoke-rc.d networking stop invoke-rc.d ifrename start invoke-rc.d networking start
