gpdf just exploits a bug in the XFree86 server. It changes the mouse cursor to
busy and back to normal each time it generates a trumbnail. As a result, the
cursor gets changed as many times as there are pages in your pdf.

The X server bug[1] I'm talking about here could be described like this: an
allocated _animated_ cursor is not freed even when calling the appropriate
free function against it. Having in mind that 'busy' cursors are the ones
usually animated, gpdf should exploit the bug in high rates. However, the bug
still applies to Mozilla Firefox and other programs which tend to change
cursors quite frequently.

To conclude, avoid any mouse cursor themes which have animated cursors in them
if you usually have your X server running longer than a day or so.
