As much as I want to help, I am somewhat under pressure work wise and
wouldn't want to jeopardise my working system (it's taken a while to get it
almost right).  

I do have a kde system on this machine also running on sid (my previous
production system).  When I have some time, I'll be happy to have a go -
I've only compiled the odd small package, never a whole suite with
dependencies et al (that's why I rely on aptitude).

Good news is, I've recovered my desktop ;) but still haven't worked out
why it disappeared.
