No, soft-linking will work.  This is one reason why soft-links exist.

However, he did not create a soft-link, he created a hard one, which
cannot span filesystems.

He needs to run:
ln -s /var/chroot/sid-ia32/lib/ld-linux.so.2 /lib as root to set things up.
