--force-all never 'solves' anything, it just pushes hard enough and
ignores the problems to make things appear ok.

It depends on what you consider to be a problem. If broken dependencies, package incostencies, etc., then yes, --force-* does not solve anything.
But if the problem is just an inability to install package, then --force-* is a good solution.

all the --force options (except perhaps --force-depends which apt-get
easily repairs again afterwards) just hides the problem

It's OK. Let it hide the real problem till the time it's fixed in the repository.

and could come back to bite you later.

Hopefully, not this time.

It may be a workaround/hack but it is never a solution.

Whatever you call it, in this case it just did the job.

perhaps openoffice-installation can take the normal package-integration in amd64-port as regular package, shortly.
(without apt-get install openoffice.org-debian-files=1.1.2-2+1.0.1)

everything works fine.

Sure, the libs should work fine, but who owns the conflicting files now?
the oo libs or the ia32 libs package or both or neither?

Who cares? As soon as you know what and where might be a problem, it is always possible to de-/re- install related packages, and one way or another fix the problem appeared it again.
