It is as good an idea as I can come up with. And for me it works,
although my xserver is back to 4.3 now, in an attempt to make 3D
acceleration work. On the other hand, I fail to see any actually
useful feature that you get by upgrading to xorg 6.8.  :-)

As for compiling it yourself: I wouldn't consider that an option.
Apart from the extreme pain you have to go through, it completely
messes up your package system. You could get away with that on debian
stable, but I would not recommend it on a "moving target" like
testing.

I had no problem whatsoever. I think you have to force a few
transitions in apt, but once it is installed, everything should be
fine.
