I understand debian's current default gcc (3.3) 's support for amd64 isn't
really up to standard. The kernel, being a critical part of the system, was
beter off being compiled using gcc-3.4 instead. But to stay compatable with
Sarge, the rest of the distribution (at least pure64) is compiled using
gcc-3.3.
This means that all kernel modules must also be compiled with gcc-3.4, though.
The way you changed the link is fine. Don't worry. If you wish you can even
leave gcc pointing to gcc-3.4, this will not cause any problems. When, in a
few months, the default compiler is changed to something else (possibly
gcc-4.0), this link will get overwritten.
Cheers,
Ernest.
