Installation on Gigabyte GA-K8NS-Pro

Hi all

I just want to give a little report about my success on installing
debian pure64 on my new box with the mainboard Gigabyte GA-K8NS-Pro.

First of all I disabled all the features I do not need like sata (I have
only one PATA disk connected), raid and so on. I enabled onboard-sound
and onboard-lan.

Installation went smothly (sid-amd64-netinst) and without problems.
The network interface was discovered automatically. I could use
pppoeconf to setup dsl connection and install the rest of the system
(after manually editing sources.list, which was not done automatically).

Howewer, sound did not work. It was not even visible in lspci output.
I rebooted and disabled the sound in the BIOS. Now sound did work with
snd-intel8x0 (automatically detected). After that I tried enabling the
sound in the BIOS again, and now it seems to be correct -- it works when
enabled in BIOS, and does not when disabling. Must be a bug of the BIOS.
Just if somebody has the same effect with a new board, try disabling the
sound in BIOS.

But now eth0 was not discovered automatically. I had a look in
/var/messages and found it was using sk98lin the last time it was
autodetected. I modprobe'd that lib and it worked. So I added that to
/etc/modules and now everything works fine.

So, for the mainboard compatibility list:

Mainboard Gigabyte GA-K8NS-Pro
ATA: nforce
ATA Raid: ?
Serial ATA: ?
SCSI: -
Network: sk98lin
Sound: snd-intel8x0

Bye,

Tobias
