RE: Get rid of the lib64 dir?
Discuss this with Rusty Russell <rusty@rustcorp.com.au> and figure out whether this can go into a future FHS specification. Rusty may need to take this proposal to the Linux Kernel Summit in July and have it reviewed by the other core Linux kernel developers. I would argue that there's nothing wrong with your proposal so long as it matches some version of an official FHS specification. Debian could be the first to comply with this spec.
Judging from Rusty's comments about /lib and /lib64 during the AMD64 Debian discussion last year at the Ottawa Linux Symposium, he'll be interested in pushing for some sort of standardization on how multiple architectures are supported.

OK. As I said at the beginning, I have not enough experience in this
field to really make a serious proposal how to handle multiarch best.
