process max virtual memory limit in amd64?

sorry for the lame question.

i heard that in amd64 the maximum virtual memory per process is limited to
4GB (in 64bit mode) due to CPU limitations.

is it true? (the kernel source shows the opposite).

is it possible a process to malloc() more than 4GB in 64bit mode?
