The key message seems to be

Obviously kernel upstream believes the current code is correct, and that
this is a gcc bug.  But I'm wondering why the embedded assembly in the Linux
kernel can't be fixed to include .arch ev56, so that the error-checking
semantics of gcc can be preserved in the general case?
